A disability parking permit allows the holder to park in designated disability parking spots and receive concessions for parking in public spaces where signs show specific time limits.
If you are providing transport to a Member as a part of your booking, you are able to use their disability parking permit on your vehicle.
The Australian Disability Parking permit is nationally recognized and has minimum parking concessions. These minimum concessions are that the disability parking permit allows the holder to:
- park in designated disability car spaces
- park in metered, government-managed car spaces for more than the maximum time limit displayed on signs (specific amount of time varies by state).
Concessions by state
In addition to these concessions, some states have additional concessions that are awarded to permit holders that suit their specific local needs:
New South Wales
In NSW a mobility parking permit allows you to access the following parking concessions.
Metered, coupon, or ticket parking areas
Permit holders can park in metered, coupon, or ticket parking areas at no charge in council and on-street parking areas.
Time-limited parking areas
If you're a permit holder, you can park in time-limited parking areas for longer time periods.
Signposted time limit | Disability parking time limit |
More than 30 minutes | Unlimited |
30 minutes | up to 2 hours |
Less than 30 minutes | Maximum 30 minutes |
No parking areas
In areas signposted as ‘No Parking’, permit holders can stop for up to 5 minutes to drop off or pick up passengers or goods.
The driver must remain within 3 meters of the vehicle.
Privately operated car parks
Parking concessions do not apply in privately operated car parks, e.g. operating behind boom gates or within private business complexes.
To park in a designated disability parking space within a private car park, you must display your valid permit. You also must pay any fees required by the car park operator and obey any time limits applied to the designated disability parking space.
Private car parks operate under rules determined by the private operator. Enforcement of these rules is the responsibility of designated authorised officers.
Victoria
Victoria has only the minimum concession requirements for permit holders. This means that permit holders can:
- park a vehicle in an accessible parking bay for the time displayed on the sign, or
- park in a standard parking bay for double the time displayed on the parking sign.
Permits do not allow holders to:
- park in restricted locations such as Clearways, No Stopping or No Parking Areas, Taxi Only Areas, Bus Zones, and Authorised Resident Areas
- park for free in areas where parking fees apply.
Queensland
In QLD, an Australian disability parking permit can be used to park:
- for free at any on-street parking in local government-metered and regulated parking areas:
- up to 30 minutes—when the time limit shown on a sign is less than this
- for an unlimited time—when the time limit shown on a sign is 30 minutes or more
- in parking bays displaying the international symbol of access for on and off-street parking bays.
South Australia
In SA time limit concessions are available to disability parking permit holders.
Where no disability spaces are available or where a sign or meter shows a specific time limit, the following concessions apply for permit holders:
- less than 30 minutes, the time limit is 30 minutes
- 30 minutes or more but less than one hour, the time limit is two hours
- more than one hour, the time limit is double the period indicated.
Conditions of use
The conditions of use for parking permits vary from state to state. As a general rule, the following conditions apply at minimum:
- The permit can only be displayed when the vehicle’s transporting the individual whom the permit was issued to
- The permit must be clearly displayed so that the permit number and expiry date are visible from outside the vehicle.
