Our insurance covers you while performing normal support activities as a Social Carer
As a Social Carer, you are there to lend a helping hand. You are not trained or able to assist with medical care or business and professional services. If Social Carers are found to be providing services outside of the specified parameters and an incident was to occur, you would not be covered.
Approved Social Carer activities include;
- Social support
- In-home support including meal preparation and light housework
- Assistance in performing physical activity
- Skills training
- Online or phone support
- Personal care*
*Risk Mitigation in Personal Care Services
All Social Carers and independent contractors engaged in delivering personal care services must notify Like Family and conduct a thorough risk assessment before providing any service to ensure the safety and well-being of both the Members and themselves.
Social Carers must possess the appropriate qualifications, training, and experience required to deliver the services safely and competently. Prior to commencing care, they must review and address any specific client needs, health conditions, or mobility concerns to mitigate potential risks. Additionally, all service interactions must be documented diligently, with comprehensive booking notes provided after each session to maintain continuity of care, accountability, and compliance with regulatory standards.
Carers are also responsible for adhering to infection control measures, using proper manual handling techniques, and reporting any near-misses, incidents, hazards, or concerns promptly to the appropriate channels. Failure to comply with these requirements may result in review or termination of engagement.
Our insurance will not cover you if you perform anything outside of these approved activities, including but not limited to the following:
- Climbing ladders
- Using machinery (i.e. Chainsaw or a Whipper Snipper)
- Medication Dispensing
- Heavy lifting
- Home repairs
- Providing professional services (such as setting us a business for your member or providing financial advice)
Though providing transport is an approved Social Carer activity, it is not covered under our insurance policy. Social Carers are responsible for ensuring their vehicles are insured appropriately and are in safe driving condition. Read more about this topic under "Transport Insurance" in the Transport & Expenses section of our help centre.
Ensure you are taking the necessary due diligence by contacting the Like Family team if you have any concerns your activity might not be approved.
