Minimum documentation requirements for becoming a Social Carer

In order to safeguard our community members, Like Family has a number of minimum requirements all Social Carers must meet in order to be eligible to work on our platform.

In order to become a Social Carer with Like Family, applicants will need to have (or be willing to obtain) the following:

  • Proof of vaccination for 2 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine
  • A certificate of completion for COVID-19 infection control training
  • 3 references (2 character and 1 employment reference, none of whom can be related to the applicant)
  • 100 points of ID and the right to work in Australia
  • An appropriate background check for the type of work they want to do (either a Police Check or NDIS Worker Screening Check).

How do I know which is the right background check for me to obtain?

The 3 most important distinctions between a police check and the NDIS Worker Screening Check are:

  1. Who you are able to work with
  2. How long they are valid for
  3. The cost

Police Checks

A Police Check grants you clearance to work with Aged Care and Privately Funded Members only and is valid for a period of 3 years before they need to be reissued. You can source a police check for under $50 through Cited. Learn more here.

NDIS Worker Screening Checks

An NDIS Worker Screening Check, considered a "gold standard" in background checks, will give you access to all Aged Care and NDIS Members and most privately funded Members. They are valid for 5 years before they need to be reissued. The cost of the NDIS Worker Screening Check varies slightly from state to state, but you can find out more here.

What other documents will I be required to provide?

This will depend on the type of work you want to do and who you want to do it with, but may include:

  • A certificate of completion for the NDIS Worker Orientation Module
  • A copy of your driver's licence and vehicle registration
  • Your Working with Children Check or Blue Card
  • First Aid Certificate
  • A certificate of completion for the NDIS Supporting Safe and Enjoyable Meals Module
